FreeBSD 15
FreeBSD 15 is the latest release of FreeBSD, launched on December 2, 2025, designed for a stable, high-performance, and highly configurable server environment. The system is frequently chosen for its predictable behavior, advanced networking capabilities, and a high degree of control over the environment. The new version continues to build on these strengths while making FreeBSD more accessible for modern use cases.
Key updates:
- Base system management via pkg — FreeBSD 15 supports installing and updating the base system as a set of packages, and this approach is used by default for VM images and public clouds.
- Virtualization updates — bhyve and vmm now support arm64 and RISC-V, along with new capabilities for network scenarios and guest system management.
- Updated system components — the release includes new versions of LLVM, OpenZFS, OpenSSH, and OpenSSL.
- Improved compatibility with Linux applications — the Linuxulator now includes an implementation of inotify system calls.
- Optimizations for virtual environments — in Hyper-V, TLB flush is now performed via hypercalls, which can deliver a performance improvement of up to 40% in this scenario.
