Serverspace: Nested virtualization support in VMware Cloud

We’ve expanded the capabilities of VMware Cloud. Serverspace users can now run their own hypervisors and create nested virtual machines within a cloud server. We’ve also updated the Public API, introducing OAuth token-based authorization with configurable permissions.

Nested virtualization in VMware Cloud

VMware Cloud now supports nested virtualization (nested hypervisor). You can install your own hypervisor inside a rented cloud server and run additional virtual machines.

This allows you to build complex testing environments and experiment with infrastructure without purchasing physical hardware.

The new feature is useful for several scenarios:

  • Software testing. Deploy multiple virtual machines, connect them to a network, and test how applications and services interact.
  • Working with hypervisors. Install and explore Proxmox, Hyper-V, and other compatible solutions in a cloud environment.
  • Infrastructure simulation. Recreate multi-server architectures, test configurations, and validate changes before deploying them to production.
  • Training. Create lab environments for system administrators and DevOps engineers.

You can enable or disable nested virtualization yourself through the server control panel or the Public API. There’s no need to contact technical support.

New authorization capabilities in the Public API

Another update improves the security of connections between third-party applications and Serverspace cloud infrastructure.

The Public API now supports OAuth token-based authorization with configurable permissions and a consent screen.

When connecting an application, users can specify which actions it is allowed to perform. This helps control access to infrastructure and prevents third-party services from receiving more permissions than necessary.

Both updates expand Serverspace’s capabilities for developing, testing, and managing cloud infrastructure.
